Prairie Star Middle School

My second partnership was a little chaotic. I split my partnership into two smaller partnerships. I spent the first two weeks and the last week at Prairie Star Middle in Mr. Dickerson's sixth grade science class. From the start Mr. Dickerson was very welcoming and helpful. He gave me multiple opportunities to get in front of the class and teach lessons of all lengths. He also gave me a teacher's textbook and many other workbooks to use during class and at home for lesson planning. From the first day I knew I was going to be having a lot of fun because they were hitting a tennis ball across the room! I taught lessons over Newton's three Laws of Motion and inclined planes. Mr. Dickerson has very full and energetic classes. Both hours are almost, if not, completely full and the students are always talking and having a good time. There is a para in the room for both hours who assists certain students during the period. My first lesson I taught the very first week in the classroom with Mr. Dickerson. I did about a 10 minute review of Newton's three Laws of Motion. I showed a BrainPOP video and then had a discussion with them and asked them to explain in their own words what each law meant. We also went over quite a few examples. The second lesson I taught was the last week in the classroom. Mr. Dickerson helped me teach a lab over inclined planes. We had the students get in groups and test out how many newtons of force it took to pull a block up a board. The height was changed to make it more steep, thus more force required. The students responded well to the lab and had fun with it. One really powerful thing that occurred during the lab was a young lady kept asking me questions during homework time and during the lab. I loved being able to help her. Most of the time she had the correct answers anyways so i gave her encouragement to keep working. After class, Mr. Dickerson informed me that the girl had not asked him a single question all year. It really touched me that I was able to make her feel comfortable enough to ask me questions. During my time at Prairie Star, I also shadowed a student. He enjoyed having me follow him around. He was very social and outgoing but could be easily distracted. Overall, I had a great time at Prairie Star and found it hard to say goodbye to such a great group of

students and an amazing mentor teacher.
