The Barstow School

Two weeks of my second partnership were spent at The Barstow School. Barstow is a private K-12 school just over the border into Missouri. I chose to go to Barstow because I was interested in seeing the atmosphere and the teaching styles of teachers at a private school. My first day I met with Kate Bradley, the middle school director. She gave me a schedule outlining what teachers I would be with during my time at Barstow. I was able to visit 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science classes. From the start I was very impressed with the school. All the teachers were very welcoming and so were the students. 7th and 8th graders are required to have a certain tablet while 6th graders are required to have an iPad. During class all notes are taken on the devices and almost no paper is used in the classroom. At first I wondered if students would abuse their devices, but they are all really responsible and use the computers for their correct purpose. Class sizes are much smaller than public schools and have on average 14 students. Mr. David Bieier was the sixth grade science teacher. He has actually worked with NASA before coming to Barstow and is really into science. He cares for all his students and uses lots of visuals for his students. When they were studying circuit and light bulbs, he brought tons of different light bulbs for the students to see. Mrs. Sarah Holmes teaches seventh grade science. She was very welcoming and loved having me help in the classroom. For my time in her class they were mainly working on frog dissections. It was so much fun to watch students explore the frogs and I even got to help every day during the dissections. They started a new unit on flowers right before I left. I was also able to spend time in Mr. Gavin Wood's eighth grade science class. Mr. Wood is also an algebra teacher and the coach of the robotics team. He had a laid-back approach to teaching and was always willing to answer any questions I had. In Mr. Wood's class they were finishing up a unit on space and then started a new unit on weather. Overall, my time at Barstow was life changing. I loved having the experience of a private school and found it very difficult to leave when my two weeks were up!
