Lakewood Middle School

For my first partnership I went to Mrs. Jessica Wilhelm's sixth grade science class at Lakewood Middle School. I spent six weeks in her classroom getting to know students and paras in both first and second hour. I really enjoyed Mrs. Wilhelm because she is a very kind person who was always having me do various things for her or having me interact with the students. Sixth grade science is earth science. I came in on the end of a unit on volcanoes and earthquakes. The next unit covered was the rock cycle. Finally, I left a little ways into the weather and climate unit. I was able to teach three lessons in my six week time-frame. My first lesson was a lab using chocolate to demonstrate the rock cycle. The students really enjoyed me getting to teach them and loved eating the chocolate after the lab was complete. My next lesson partnered with Mrs. Wilhelm and a substitute. We all preformed a demo for the students that demonstrated how air pressure works. And finally, my last lesson was a review game of the layers of the atmosphere. Also during my time at Lakewood I met with the principal, Scott Currier. Mr. Currier and I had a brief meeting where I asked him a few questions. The questions included what a typical day looks like for him, what he looks for in a prospective teacher during an interview, and what he is most proud of this year. I gained a lot of valuable information from Mr. Currier. Finally during my six weeks at Lakewood, I shadowed a student. The student I shadowed was very outgoing and loved having me follow her around for three hours. We started in science class with Mrs. Wilhelm. Then she had English where they were in the hallway partner reading the book The Westin Game. Her friends and her had lots of questions for me and loved talking to me. I finished the shadow time in Speech and Drama. They were working on giving impromptu speeches that day. I really enjoyed the shadow experience. If I could change one thing, I would have shadowed earlier in my partnership so I would have gotten to know more students on a more personal level earlier on.
